yellow freesia

Fragrant, brightest egg-yolk-yellow flowers erupt in Spring – instantly illuminating any garden and producing plenty of blooms for bouquets! Their lush and lovely sword-shaped foliage forms a dense, 1’ tall mass that grows through the Winter months. Numerous flower spikes eventually emerge, each topped with a spray of brilliant blossoms that open in slow succession.
It is now supposed that usual garden freesia have all originated from Freesia refracta (common freesia). The true species are mostly white or yellow but hybridization has altered the color range.

Freesia flowers convey a variety of meanings, including friendship, innocence, thoughtfulness, perseverance and being high-spirited. In the language of flowers, freesias were traditionally used to convey friendship.
It was the German physician Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese (1795-1876) who discovered a special flower in South Africa. Freese was immediately fascinated by the flower and took it to Europe. The genus ‘Freesia’ was first published by the German botanist Klatt in 1866, who named the flower after the german physician.
